The Seventh Commandment

We are continuing to look at the Ten Commandments and today we examine number 7 "Thou shalt not commit adultery." This one seems pretty straight forward doesn't it? Now Jesus, the living Torah, told us how to apply the instruction. He said in Matthew 5:27-28: "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (RSV) This is consistent with the Hebrew Sages who said: "This commandment, too, has many levels beyond the literal one. Thus, the Sages speak of certain kinds of improper fraternization and behavior that can incite sensual lust as being tantamount to adultery itself."

But wait, there is more! It was also said that to interfere with someones livelihood is an example of this prohibition, because it showed a disregard for anothers rights. By study of this command, we can see that it goes far beyond a physical act. It includes things done that interfere with the rights of another. We are to look to our heart and attitude to verify our compliance with this commandment. The Living Torah required this approach and He is the perfect embodiment of the written Torah. One of the reasons He came to earth was to instruct us in how to live to please God. We must not casually disregard His life as our instruction.

Today, examine how you treat other people. Do you flirt with members of the opposite sex? Do you exceed the bounds of friendliness? If so, according to the Sages, you are violating the 7TH Commandment. What does your heart tell you about your relationship with others? Do you seek to take advantage of others regarding their business? We are all learning that there is much more to the Commandments then what we thought. Now we are beginning to see why study of the Torah is so important.
